Men’s golf opens in Garden City

GARDEN CITY, Kan. – The Fort Hays State men’s golf team opened the 2022-23 season with an individual competition at the High Plains Amateur this weekend (Aug. 27-28), held at the par-71, 6,935-yard Golf Club at Southwind. Sophomore Parker Krob led the Tigers after finishing in a tie for 18th out of 72 competitors in the open division thanks to a 2-under second round. The seven Tigers that competed combined for 29 birdies and three eagles over the 36-hole competition.

Krob improved his position on the leaderboard by 26 spots after improving 10 shots from Saturday to Sunday. He finished the weekend at 6-over after rounds of 79 and 69 while leading the team with seven birdies and one eagle. Krob’s round of 69 was the second-best round posted in the open division.

Dustin Nichols fired rounds of 80 and 75 to finish the week at 13-over, good for a tie for 44th. He opened the year with a chip-in eagle on his third hole of season and finished the week with four birdies and one eagle.

Tanner Copeland finished one shot back of Nichols, finishing in a tie for 46th at 14-over after rounds of 79 and 77. He carded two birdies over the 36 holes.

Bryce Cowan followed up a round of 78 with a 79 on Sunday, placing 53rd at 15-over. The senior recorded five birdies on the weekend, including three in the opening round and two on the final day.

Jackson Rader improved his score by 12 strokes between rounds thanks to a 2-over 73 on Sunday. He finished 54th on the leaderboard at 16-over with four birdies and one eagle on the week.

Caleb Humble also bettered his score on day two, following up an 82 with a round of 78 to finish in a tie for 56th at 16-over. He recorded three birdies on Sunday.

August Nilsson made his collegiate debut with rounds of 79 and 88, finishing 64th at 25-over. The true freshman opened the tournament strong, sitting at 1-over through the first 14 holes of round one. Nilsson recorded four birdies over the course of the tournament.

The Tigers will return to competition in three weeks when they travel to Muskogee, Okla. for the NSU Men’s Golf Classic September 19-20.
