KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State junior Sammy Sanchez has been named MIAA Pitcher of the Week, presented by Mammoth Turf, announced Monday (March 7) by the league office.
Sanchez hurled seven scoreless innings in Friday’s 2-0 win over Emporia State, helping the Tigers to their first shutout victory since February 2020. The righty struck out seven batters in the win, including two called third strikes. He did not walk a batter all afternoon, scattering eight hits across his seven innings, only one of which went for extra bases.
He finished one strikeout shy of his team-best season high of eight, set last week at Washburn. The Fort Collins, Colo. native now has a team-best 31 strikeouts on the year, eighth-most in the MIAA, alongside an ERA of 4.30.
Sanchez is the first Tiger to earn a weekly MIAA honor since Garrett Stephens was hitter of the week in February 2020.
Sanchez and the rest of the Tigers will be on the road this weekend (March 11-13) when they take on Rogers State in another conference series. Action begins at 2 p.m. both Friday and Saturday before a 1 p.m. finale on Sunday.
