Wrestling falls at UCM

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – Fort Hays State fell short in its regular season dual finale at Central Missouri on Sunday (Feb. 13). The Tigers started out strong, but after forfeiting at 141 the Mules picked up four straight decisions and the Tigers were unable to regain the lead. The Tigers finished the regular season 4-8 in duals, 1-3 in the MIAA, and the Mules end with a 6-8 overall record and 2-2 in the MIAA.

Broderick Green put the Tigers on the board with a 16-0 technical fall at 125 and Rhett Koppes helped supplement the lead with a 7-4 decision at 133, putting the Tigers up 8-0. UCM took advantage of a forfeit at 141 by the Tigers and then took an 18-8 lead with four straight decisions.

Marty Verhaeghe was able to pick up a 7-1 decision at 184 and Tereus Henry finished with a 10-3 decision at 197, putting the Tigers within four heading into the final match. A.J. Cooper scored a 1-0 decision to wrap up the dual as the Tigers fell short on team score by one.

The Tiger wrestling team begins preparation for the Super Region 6 Championships in Grand Junction, Colo. on February 26. Action begins at 11 a.m. MT / 12 p.m. CT.

Friday

The Fort Hays State wrestling team (4-7, 1-2 MIAA) fell 40-0 to No. 3 Nebraska-Kearney in their final home dual of the season on Friday (Feb. 11). The Lopers (11-4, 3-1 MIAA) had five technical falls in the victory.

Through five matches the Lopers led 21-0 picking up three technical falls and a pair of decisions. At 141 Cole Zebley and No. 11 Nick James were scoreless until James picked up a takedown as time expired in the second period. Two third-period takedowns lifted James over Zebley 7-2. At 157, Anthony Scantlin surrendered an early takedown to No. 5 ranked Jacob Wasser, who went on to win by a 5-2 decision.

UNK would pick up another pair of tech falls at 165 and 174, putting the dual out of reach for the Tigers. Marty Verhaeghe faced Billy Higgins at 184. Higgins picked up a takedown as the first-period ended and he escaped to start the second and held on for a 3-1 decision. In the only ranked matchup of the evening No. 12 Tereus Henry took on No. 11 Hayden Prince at 197. Prince scored a first-period takedown and a reversal to start the second-period. Another takedown at the end of the third period would secure a 7-0 decision for Prince. In the final match of the evening, AJ Cooper faced No. 7 ranked Lee Herrington. Herrington scored a takedown late in the first period and held on to win 3-1.
