COLBY — After a tough loss Friday in the Orange and Black Classic in Colby, the Hays High School girls’ basketball team bounced back with a 45-30 win over Colby in Saturday’s third-place game.
The Indians ended up in the third-place game after a 57-55 loss in double overtime to state-ranked Goodland on Friday.
Hays led most of the first quarter but allowed Goodland to tie the game late in the first. The Indians went into the second quarter tied 11-11.
The entire first half was a tight back-and-forth game. HHS eventually trailed 21-19 at halftime.
Hays High ended the third quarter with a 36-31 advantage. The fourth quarter was tight. Hays High fought hard and didn’t let Goodland lead until the Cowgirls were able to tie the game to force overtime.
Going in the first overtime, no team ever led by more than a point, keeping it tight at the free-throw line. Hays High was unable to finish off the Cowgirls, forcing another overtime, 49-49
HHS struggled to score in double overtime, falling behind by four with seconds left in the game. Carly Lang was able to hit a 3-pointer to get back within one of the Cowgirls, but the Indians couldn’t stop Goodland at the free-throw line and fell short in double OT.
