COLBY — The Hays High School boys’ basketball team made quick work of its first-round opponent in the Orange and Black Classic in Colby on Thursday with a 29-point victory (63-34) over Liberty High School from Colorado Springs.
Hays High only trailed one time against Liberty in the early going, but the Indians kicked in the intensity and never let Liberty back into the game. Hays High ended the first quarter ahead 20-8.
Indians were able to outscore Liberty 11-5 in the second quarter for a comfortable margin at the break, 31-13
Hays High went deep into its bench early in the third quarter and never let Liberty back into the game. Hays High was able to outscore Liberty once again in the quarter to lead 48-23.
The Indians will now move to the second round in hopes of making it into the championship game Saturday night. Hays High will play Beloit at 4:45 p.m. today in the semifinals. The Trojans defeated Goodland, 42-23.
The Hays High girls also won their opener Thursday, defeating Chanute, 48-32. The Indians will play Goodland at 3 p.m. today in the semifinals. The Cowgirls defeated Beloit, 53-15.
