KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State’s Katie Wagner has been named the first MIAA Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week of the 2021-22 season, announced Wednesday (Nov. 17) by the league office.
Wagner had a stellar start to the season, leading the Tigers in points and rebounds in both contests over the opening weekend. The guard first tallied a career-high 23 points and nine rebounds in Friday’s win over Southeastern Oklahoma State before racking up 26 points and 15 rebounds in Saturday’s triumph over Sioux Falls. Both totals were personal-bests for the second-year freshman, who recorded her third double-double in the process. Fifteen of those points came in the fourth quarter on Saturday, helping the Tigers hold off a late Cougar run. It was the first 15-15 game by a Tiger since 2017.
The Maize, Kan. native was highly effective in her shot selection, knocking down 70.4 percent from the floor (19-of-27), including a 10-for-13 effort on Saturday. Through the opening weekend of play, Wagner ranks 14th in the country in scoring with an average of 24.5 points per game and 21st in rebounding with an average of 12.0 per contest.
She also added four assists against Sioux Falls, one off her career high, and three steals against SEOSU, matching her personal best.
Wagner and the rest of the Tigers will make their home debut this weekend (Nov. 19-20) with a pair of non-conference contests. Up first is a matchup with St. Cloud State Friday at 6 p.m. before FHSU hosts Cameron Saturday beginning at 4 p.m.
