Wrestling places six in South Dakota

MITCHELL, S.D. – The Fort Hays State wrestling team competed in the Dakota Wesleyan Open in on Saturday (Nov. 13) and came home with six individual placers: two third place, one fourth, one fifth, and two sixth.

A.J. Cooper and Tereus Henry were the two third placers at their respective weights. Cooper (285) won his first match by fall in 3:30. He then worked his way to the semifinals with wins by major decision 13-0, and another fall in 7:00, but was unable to make it any further losing by 10-5 decision in the semis. On the consolation side, he would finish victorious with a 7-0 decision in the consolation semifinals and then taking third place with a forfeit by Neil Hanson of Southwest Minnesota State. Henry would receive a first-round bye before winning by major decision 12-2, and decision 5-1. He would then fall in the semifinals by decision 6-2. Tereus reached the consolation finals by a forfeit and then would pull out the win by decision 6-1 over Jud Kuchera from Nebraska-Kearney.

Marty Verhaeghe would finish in fourth place in the 184 weight class. Verhaeghe fell in the first round by a 12-0 major decision. He worked his way all the way up the backside with a bye in the first consolation round and then wins by fall in 2:01, major decision 11-3, fall in 1:56, and back-to-back decisions, 12-5 and 9-6. His day ended there after reaching the six-match limit.

Cason Lindsey was the lone fifth place finisher for the Tigers in the 149 bracket as he drew a first-round bye, then fell in the second round by decision 7-6. Lindsey worked his way up the consolation ladder with wins by fall in 1:53, and three straight decisions: 7-6, 5-2, and 8-7. He fell in the consolation semis by fall in 4:24, but was given fifth place due to a no contest ruling over teammate Rhett Edmonson.

The final two placers for the Tigers were Tom VanValkenburg (125) and Rhett Edmonson (149) who both finished sixth. VanValkenburg drew a first-round bye before dropping his second match by decision 6-3. He then won four straight, the first three of which were falls in 34 seconds, 1:17, and 34 seconds again, wrapping up with a 4-3 decision. He then fell to the same opponent from earlier by decision 9-5 in the consolation semifinals and finished sixth after reaching the six-match limit. Edmonson won his first match of the day by technical fall 16-0 but then fall in a similar fashion 18-0 in his second match. Similar to VanValkenburg, Edmonson won four straight matches, with three of them being by fall: 46 seconds, 1:20, decision 11-8 and 1:06. He then reached the six-match limit and finished sixth.

The Tigers will be back in action as they travel to Kearney, Neb. Next week for the Younes Memorial Open on Saturday (Oct. 20). Action will begin at 9 a.m. Full results can be found below:
