Preliminary results of Hays City Commission, USD 489 now in

On Tuesday, voters headed to polling places to vote in Ellis County elections.

The total turnout for the county was 20%, with the Hays City Commission and the Hays USD 489 Board of Education constituting the key races in the city.

This year, the Hays area voted for commissioners to fill two, two-year terms and one, one-year term.

Preliminary results show incumbents Shaun Musil and Sandy Jacobs leading with 31.6% and 25.5%, respectively.

Reese Barrick followed with 20.7% of the votes.

Preliminary results for the USD 489 BOE show Curt Vajnar leading with 27.2% of votes, Ken Brooks with 17.7% and Meagan Zampieri-Lillpopp with 14.1%. Zampieri-Lillpopp had a narrow lead over Cathy Hopkins by only five votes after Tuesday night’s early results.

City of Ellis residents voted in David McDaniel as their mayor, while Kevin Bieber was voted in as mayor of Schoenchen.

Additional county races include the BOE races for USDs 388 and 432.

The Ellis County Commission will need to canvass the votes to provide official election results.
