Men’s golf closes out fall season

BROKEN ARROW, Okla. – Fort Hays State Men’s Golf closed out its fall season on Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 25-26) at the Tulsa Cup, hosted by Rogers State University. The tournament took place at The Club at Indian Springs in Broken Arrow, a par-72 venue. The Tigers finished 18th as a team.

Fort Hays State shot 298 as a team in the opening round, its lowest score of the three rounds. The Tigers went on to shoot 300 in the second round and 306 in the third round, finishing with a total of 904. Scoring conditions were superb as Rogers State won the tournament with a blistering team score of 17-under par over the three rounds (847). Central Missouri shot 14-under as a team (850) and Henderson State shot 10-under (854). The rest of the team field produced totals over par.

Bryce Cowan had the best round by a Tiger individual out of the gate, shooting a 3-under par 69 in the opening round. That was the only under-par round by any FHSU player. Jackson Rader was the closest to finishing under par in the second round with an even-par 72.

Cowan was the top individual for the Tigers with a 221, shooting 76 twice after his opening round 69. He tied for 43rd at 5-over par overall. Parker Krob shot rounds of 76-77-75 for a total of 228 (+12) and tied for 66th. Dustin Nichols tied for 78th after rounds of 77, 75, and 79 (231, +15). Rader tied for 82nd with rounds of 76, 72, and 84 (232, +16). Tanner Copeland figured into the team scoring in the third round. He carded rounds of 80, 79, and 76 (235, +19).

JJ Zimmer of Union University (Tenn.) was the individual champion at 10-under par overall. After a first round even-par effort, he shot rounds of 6-under and 4-under to win the tournament by one stroke over Luke Palmowski of Rogers State. Eighteen golfers finished under par overall. Twenty-two finished at even or better.

The Tigers are scheduled to return to Oklahoma to open their spring season on March 14-15 in Owasso for the Hillcat Classic, also hosted by Rogers State.
