Women’s golf improves in Day 2 in Edmond

EDMOND, Okla. – The Fort Hays State women’s golf team improved 20 shots between rounds one and two of the Grace Shin Invitational (Oct. 4-5), moving up two spots to place 17th. The tournament was held at the Golf Club of Edmond, a par-71, 5,804-yard layout.

The Tigers opened the tournament with a team score of 335 on Monday, sitting in 19th place, before improving by 20 shots to a score of 315 in round two. It was tied for the second-best improvement among any of the 20 teams. Fort Hays State finished the tournament strong, playing the last nine holes in a combined 10-over par.

Kira Mestl led the team in the first round with a 5-over 76, the third-best round of her collegiate career. The senior followed that performance up with another round of 76 on Tuesday, finishing in a tie for 27th at 10-over. She carded three birdies on the week and played the par threes in 1-under par, tied for fourth-best in the field.

Morgan Brasser opened the tournament with a round of 83 on Monday before improving by six shots on Tuesday with a second-round score of 6-over 77, finishing the tournament in a tie for 60th at 18-over. Brasser collected five birdies on the week, tied for 13th in the field of 108 players. She also was tied for first in the field in par-3 scoring, playing the short holes in 2-under par for the week.

Kerrigan Rudolph posted rounds of 86 and 81 to finish in a tie for 82nd. She matched Mestl with three birdies on the week.

Shauna Lee (90, 81) and Lexie Ridder (95, 84) both improved by nine shots between the first and second rounds. Lee placed 89th at 29-over, while Ridder finished 101st at 37-over.

Rogers State held on to take the team title at 18-over 586, while Northeastern State’s Aitana Hernandez won the individual title at even par 142 (72-70).

The Tigers will return to action in two weeks (Oct. 18-19) when they travel to Warrensburg, Mo. for the Midwest Classic.
