The Fort Hays Men’s Soccer team fell short on its home field against Harding University on Saturday (Oct. 2) by a score of 2-1. The Tigers tied the match late in the second half only to see Harding score on a fast break with less than two minutes left. The Tigers suffered their first conference loss and fall to 5-3-1 overall (2-1 GAC), while Harding picked up its first win of the season.
The Bisons got on the board first with a header from Georgios Petousis off of a corner from Andres Castano in the 13th minute. The Tigers would make several attempts to tie the match and were finally successful in the 72nd minute as Antonio De La Torre slammed the ball past the keeper after receiving a pass from Nicolas Cortes. The Tigers were on the verge of taking the lead with a penalty kick opportunity with just over three minutes remaining, but a missed attempt left the door open and Harding responded with Camilo Porto beating Kieran Brown in a one-on-one breakaway situation. The Tigers outshot the Bisons 16-9 and Brown finished with two saves in the match.
The Tigers will be back in action on Thursday Oct. 7, as they go on the road to Northeastern State with kickoff scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
