Fort Hays State Tennis improved to 4-2 overall on the season with a 7-0 shutout of Bethany College (Kan.) on Tuesday (Sept. 28) at the FHSU Tennis Courts. The Tigers completely blanked their opponent in six of the nine matches contested for the day.
The Tigers did not surrender a point in doubles action with all three teams winning by scores of 6-0. Stefany Stemmer and Maria Paz Diaz teamed at the No. 1 position, Fiorella Mendez and Kylie Aufdengarten teamed at No. 2, and Aliyah Frederick and Heidi Lubbers teamed at No. 3.
Stemmer, Diaz, and Mendez remained perfect on the day without allowing a point in singles play as well. Stemmer played the No. 1 position, Diaz played No. 2, and Mendez was at No. 3. Aside from the 6-0, 6-0 scores from the No. 1 through No. 3 positions for FHSU, the No. 4 through No. 6 positions only surrendered one point each in their matches. Aufdengarten won 6-1 and was up 3-0 before her opponent retired from the match at the No. 4 position. Ferderick won at No. 5, 6-1, 6-0, and Heidi Lubbers won at No. 6, 6-0, 6-1. Hope Lubbers played a pro-8 exhibition match and won by a count of 8-1.
Some of the Tigers will now prepare to compete in the ITA Fall Central Regional this coming weekend in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The event is held Friday through Sunday Oct. 1-3.
