Fort Fitness provides students opportunity to get fit through nostalgic PE games

BY LAURYN BECKER

Missing PE class in elementary school where nostalgic games like kickball and freeze tag were played? At 3:30 p.m. every Thursday in Cunningham Hall, Fort Fitness has all of the games students have been missing – and is helping them get in shape in the process.

“The main idea of Fort Fitness is to provide an environment in which participants receive a workout through game-like activities. A class where you participate in games that you played throughout your physical education classes growing up,” FHSU Fitness Center Graduate Assistant Lezah Fox said. “During the class we want you to enjoy the activities so much that you don’t realize how great of a workout you are actually receiving.”

This is the first year for Fitness, Fox explained, and she is especially looking forward to seeing new faces and getting a good workout while playing fun games.

“There are many things we are looking forward to with Fort Fitness. We look forward to providing the students, faculty, and staff of FHSU with a fun atmosphere where you can not only receive a great workout but meet new people and learn new activities,” Fox said.

As far as games go, Fox explained that just about every elementary school PE game one can think of will be played. Those who participate will get a unique workout experience that allows all participants to play in a fun and safe environment with games they played growing up.

“Any game you can remember playing in elementary school is in play. We plan to have a wide variety of games that make you forget that you’re even exercising,” Fox said. “Our goal is to make fitness fun and present the idea that fitness doesn’t have to be one size fits all or what we usually associate working out with. We also love to hear about any of your favorite games for future classes.”

This class is open to all students, faculty and staff, retired staff, and those with a membership to the Wellness Center are welcome to join the fun as well.

“We want as many people as possible to attend, so make sure to tell your friends and family about this fun opportunity to get active!” Fox said.
