The Fort Hays State volleyball team rallied to force a fourth set before falling to No. 17 Northwest Missouri State Saturday (March 13), 3-1. The Bearcats move to 5-1 overall this spring and 2-1 in the MIAA North Division while the Tigers are now 2-3 overall and 0-3 in divisional action.
Neither team could gain an advantage for the majority of the first period, with the Tigers trailing by just one late in the set, 22-21. The Bearcats took control of the match by winning the final three points, taking the set 25-21. The visitors again pulled away late to take the second set, 25-19.
Fort Hays State battled back in the third set, turning a 7-6 deficit into a 13-8 lead behind a 7-1 run. The Tigers never relinquished that advantage, going on to secure a 25-18 win on a kill from Riley Tinder.
Northwest Missouri State responded with an early push in the fourth set, going on to win 25-16 to take the match.
The Tigers will return to the court on Thursday (March 18) when they travel north to play No. 15 Nebraska-Kearney on the road beginning at 6 p.m.
Friday
The Fort Hays State women’s volleyball team came
up a few points short Friday (March 12), falling to Missouri Western in four
sets, 20-25, 19-25, 25-22, 23-25. The Tigers are now 2-2 during the spring
season and 0-2 in MIAA North Division action, while the Griffons move to 2-4
overall and 1-1 against divisional competition.
The Tigers stayed right with the Griffons for most of the first and second sets
before MWSU pulled away with runs late in each set. The teams went
back-and-forth through the third set before the Tigers rallied to force a
fourth set. The Tigers saved a pair of match point chances in the fourth frame,
but the Griffons eventually took the set, 25-23.
