TOPEKA, Kan. – The Fort Hays State women’s track and field team saw three school records go down Saturday (Feb. 27) on day one of the 2021 MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. The Tigers also had four individuals advance to Sunday’s finals while FHSU earned team points from six different performances.
Lyric Holman broke two school records on the day, advancing to the finals in both the 60m and 200m races. The junior led the field with a blazing-fast 7.59 in the 60m dash, breaking a seven-year-old program record by .02 seconds. She followed that up with a time of 24.92 in the 200m dash, posting the second-fastest time of the day. The time is nearly a full tenth of one second faster than the previous record. Holman also ran the second leg of the distance medley relay, teaming up with Faith Little, Emily Salmans and Gretchen Kuffel for a time of 12:49.08, good for seventh place.
Mattie Rossi opened the day by breaking the school record in the pentathlon after improving her PR by 180 points to 3,497. She placed fourth in the event after placing in the top five in four of the five disciplines. Rossi set a PR in the high jump, clearing the 5-3.75 bar. The record she broke was posted by Carissa Heim 11 years ago in 2010. Rossi later placed ninth in a pair of events, narrowly missing a trip to Sunday’s finals in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.90 while clearing a distance of 17-9.75 in the long jump.
Elsewhere in the running events, Salmans (2:16.07) and Little (2:17.99, PR) both qualified for the finals in the 800m run. Abigail Stewart secured a team point for the Tigers with an eighth-place finish in the 5,000m run, crossing the line in a personal-best 18:16.54.
Fort Hays State earned team points with eighth-place finishes in three field events. Taylor Savolt had a pair of eighth-place finishes in both the heptathlon and long jump. She totaled a personal-best 3,191 points in the pentathlon. Entering the 800m run in 10th place, the sophomore earned FHSU a team point after making up a 159-point gap to climb into eighth. She also placed eighth in the long jump after a leap of 17-10.75, while Laurel Haley finished eighth in the weight throw thanks to a heave of 53-0.
The Tigers will wrap up the event Sunday (Feb. 28), with field events set to begin at 1 p.m. and field events to kick off at 2 p.m.
