The Fort Hays State University’s Student Government Association held their first meeting of 2021 on Thursday.
This meeting saw the student senators looking ahead to upcoming events and dates.
Though executive staff members as well as senators shared upcoming events, University Internship Coordinator and Career Advisor Lisa Karlin spoke to SGA members about internship opportunities and upcoming in-person career fairs.
According to Karlin, there are 19 internships through FHSU/Dane G. Hansen Foundation, FHSU Service and Masonic Cancer Alliance that are available to only Fort Hays students.
“Most of them don’t require a specific major,” Karlin said.
Each opportunity also pays between $10 and $14 an hour and has an application deadline of Tuesday, Feb. 2.
Other dates that Karlin told students to look forward to are the Health & Wellness Career Fair on Feb. 12 and the Agricultural Career Fair on Feb. 23, both of which are on campus. An all-major career fair will be held virtually on Mar. 3.
The last events that Karlin shared were for Resume Madness on Feb. 10 and the Resume and Cover Letter Writing Workshop on Feb. 16 and 17.
SGA members continued to look ahead in the semester by announcing several dates and deadlines of their own.
Treasurer David Schulte reminded the students that Feb. 18 at 4:30 pm is the allocation application deadline, while Student Senator Ryan Stanely stated that allocations workshops will be held Feb. 8 and 17.
As part of her report, Legislative Affairs Director Crystal Rojas told the student senators this year’s Higher Education Day will be held online on Feb. 18. The focus of this year is higher education funding, focusing on campus mental health services.
Community Relations Director Jayden Siebert used her own report to tell the student senators about the Virtual Involvement Fair on Feb. 3 and the Big Event on Apr. 24.
The final event reminder came from Rojas at the close of the meeting. During this time, she informed the students of a DACA informational session taking place Wednesday Feb. 3.
While these announcements took up the bulk of the meeting, each staff member as well as a few committee members gave a weekly report.
Near the end of the meeting, six new bills were read for the first time. Three bills were written for the Arts for Social Change group and three were written for the FHSU Criminal Justice Club. Each one, however, was to create a line item change in the organizations’ budgets.
The meeting then came to an end with the student senators to reconvene the following Thursday.
