Hays High wins first round of Orange and Black tourney

COLBY — On the road? No problem so far.

The Hays High School boys’ basketball team traveled to Colby on Thursday afternoon for its first-round game of the Orange and Black Classic. What resulted was a dominating 76-35 win over Ulysses for the Indians, who jumped to No. 1 in the Class 5A KBCA rankings this week.

Hays High started off strong with a nine-point lead early in the first quarter. The undefeated Indians led the entire first quarter, pulling ahead 23-7 after the first period.

The defense dominated the second quarter, allowing Ulysses to score only seven points. That left HHS with a 47-14 advantage at halftime.

Hays High came out after the half and pushed its lead to 33 over Ulysses. That helped the Indians enjoy a 66-30 margin entering the final quarter.

Dalyn Schwarz paced the Indians with 19 points, and Jace Linenberger added 15. Wesley Oakley had 12.

Hays High will play Garden City today in the semifinal round of the tournament.

The Hays High girls lost 54-41 to Goodland in their tourney opener Thursday night.
