Wasinger wins Ellis County voters in 111th District

According to the Kansas Secretary of State’s office, Republican incumbent Barb Wasinger handily won Ellis County in the 111th District of the Kansas House with 64% (7,093 votes). Democratic challenger Eber Phelps earned 3,954 votes (36%).

“Thank you to all who worked for my re-election, and I am honored to be able to serve the 111th District for another term,” Wasinger told Tiger Media Network.

Wasinger’s dominating win comes after narrowly defeating Phelps by 35 votes in the 2018 election cycle. She posted nearly 2,700 more votes in this year’s election than she received just two years ago.

Voter turnout for Ellis County was 71%, which exceeded the 59% in 2018 and the 66% during the last presidential election in 2016.

Tom Drees won the uncontested race for 23rd Judicial District 1st Division judge with 11,182 votes, while Glenn Braun received 11,551 votes to win the uncontested race for 2nd Division judge in the district.

Drees has served as the Ellis County Attorney for several years but decided to run for the judiciary position. Robert Anderson Jr. won the uncontested race for county attorney with 11,334 votes. Anderson defeated assistant county attorney Chris Lyon in the primary.

Republican Neal Younger, who defeated incumbent Dustin Roths in the primary, won the race for Ellis County commissioner in the second district with 3,665 votes.

Republican incumbent Dean Haselhorst claimed 3,556 votes in the third district race for Ellis County Commission to reclaim his seat over challenger L.R. Boyd (991 votes).

Bobbi Dreiling won the election for new Ellis County clerk, claiming 11,159 votes. Donna Maskus, longtime county clerk, did not run for re-election.

Vernon Ruder Jr. will be the new Ellis County treasurer. He received 8,517 votes, easily topping Democrat Julie Mercer (2,871). There were 1,528 write-in votes. The office was held by Lisa Schlegel, who Ruder defeated in the primary.

A total of 11,406 votes carried Rebecca Herzog as the county’s register of deeds.

Undersheriff Scott Braun will take over as the county’s sheriff after receiving 11,692 votes. He will take over for longtime sheriff Ed Harbin, who is retiring.

President Donald Trump won Ellis County with 71% of the vote. The president secured 9,423 votes compared to Democratic candidate Joe Biden’s 3,554. Libertarian candidate Jo Jorgensen earned 295 votes.

In the U.S. Senate race from Ellis County, Republican Roger Marshall earned 68% of the county voters, or 8,999 votes. Democrat Barbara Bollier had 28% of votes (3,715). The Senate seat is held by retiring Pat Roberts, a Republican.

Republican Tracey Mann earned 72% (9,375 votes) in Ellis County in the Big First U.S. House of Representatives race. Democrat Kali Barnett had 3,658 votes. The seat is held by Marshall, who is running for a U.S. Senate seat.

Incumbent Rick Billinger heavily carried Ellis County with 8,639 votes (66%) over Democratic challenger Larry Dreiling (4,420 votes).

All results are unofficial until canvassed by the county commission. Some provisional ballots and advance ballots were not counted in the final numbers, according to the secretary of state’s website.
