Four finalists for women’s track a MIAA meet

PITTSBURG, Kan. – The Fort Hays State women’s track and field team had 10 top-10 finishes Saturday (Feb. 29) on day two of the 2020 MIAA Indoor Championships. Four Tigers earned a trip to a championship race on Sunday, with five others earning team points. In all, Fort Hays State heads into Sunday with 13.5 points through seven events.

Lyric Holman got things going on the track by winning her heat in the 60m dash prelims, crossing the line in 7.79 to advance to Sunday’s finals.

A pair of Tigers will compete for a championship in the 600y run after both Peri Lange and Layne Needham finished in the top 12 of the prelims. Lange ran in 1:26.26, good for seventh, while Needham finished 10th with a time of 1:27.02.

Emily Salmans posted a time of 2:15.08 in the 800m run, finishing fourth and earning a trip to championship Sunday.

The distance medley relay team of Faith Little, Lyric Holman, Emily Salmans, Carson Pierce placed sixth with a time of 12:26.14, finishing sixth and adding three points to the Tiger total.

In the field events, Rohey Singhateh posted a top mark of 18-6.0 in the long jump, good for fifth place and four team points.

Laurel Haley picked up a team point for the Tigers thanks to an eighth-place finish in the weight throw. The junior hurled the implement 53-7.75 on her fourth toss of the afternoon.

Summer Kragel, Mattie Rossi and Haley George all cleared a max height of 5-3.25, but finished in three different spots due to judges decisions. Kragel placed fifth and picked up three team points, while Rossi added one-half point with a tie for eighth. George finished in a tie for 11th.

The Tigers wrap up the conference meet with day three on Sunday (March 1) beginning at noon.
