Track and field readies for MIAA meet

By FHSU SPORTS INFORMATION

The Fort Hays State track and field team will compete in the 2020 MIAA Indoor Championships this weekend (Feb. 28-March 1) in Pittsburg, Kan. The multi-athletes will kick off the event on Friday before the rest of the team joins in the action on Saturday.

It is the fourth time the Tigers have traveled to Pittsburg this season after competing in the Crimson & Gold Invite, the Wendy’s/Pittsburg State Invitational and the Gorilla Classic earlier in the year.

The Fort Hays State women head into the postseason ranked sixth in the MIAA according to the USTFCCCA conference rankings, while the men currently sit in eighth in the league ranks.

The men placed sixth at the indoor league meet last year, taking home three championships and four All-MIAA performances. The women’s team placed seventh thanks to four All-MIAA honors, with all four of those all-conference performers back this season. Mirena Goncalves finished runner-up in both distance races last year while Summer Kragel (high jump) and Rohey Singhateh (triple jump) both placed third.

Fort Hays State enters the conference championships with seven student-athletes on the NCAA Division II provisional list, including four from the men’s squad and three representing the women’s team. Five of those provisional performances were recorded inside the Robert W. Plater Center in Pittsburg. Ryan Stanley ranks eighth in the pole vault after clearing the 16-10.25 bar earlier this season, just one-half inch off the indoor program record. Xavier Robinson sits in 32nd on the national performance list in the long jump after posting a mark of 23-5.5 back in December. Lucas Broxterman cleared the 6-8.25 bar in the high jump in December’s Crimson & Gold Invitational, placing the junior 36th on the national chart. Mark Faber also ranks 36th nationally after clearing the 15-7.75 bar in the pole vault at the Northwest Open.

Summer Kragel cleared a personal-best 5-7.25 in the high jump two weeks ago in Pittsburg, helping the junior jump to 14th on the NCAA DII performance chart. Kayla Smith ranks 32nd in the triple jump after posting a mark of 38-7.75 at the Charlie Foster Classic. After qualifying for the NCAA DII Indoor Championships last year in the triple jump, Rohey Singhateh currently sits in 43rd in the long jump with a distance of 18-7.25.

Both the men and the women have 14 individuals ranked in the top 10 on the current MIAA performance chart.
