ICYMI: FHSU Wrestling falls short in senior night dual against No. 3 Lopers

The Tigers matched up against No. 3 Nebraska Kearney on Friday evening for their final home dual of the season, falling short with only two wins on the mat.

In the opening match, Colin Cole faced off against No. 1 ranked Josh Portillo in the 125 weight class. Cole went 2:45 on the mat and fell 20-2, losing by TF. 

In the 133 weight class, another high ranked match up occurred when No. 4 ranked Wesley Dawkins competed against the Tigers Dy’Juan Carney. Carney suffered a loss after being pinned in 1:52. 

FHSU gained some momentum as No. 2 ranked Brandon Ball stepped up against Nebraska Kearney’s Ryan Johnson in the 141 weight class. Ball pinned Johnson in 4:53, winning by a score of 16-0.

Anthony Scantlin suffered a loss in a close match against the Lopers’ Sam Turner, falling by a 4-2 decision in the 149 weight class. 

The Lopers continued their dominance on the mat in the 157 weight class, with Jacob Wasser pinning the Tigers’ Josh Lenker in 34 seconds. 

Moving to 165, Conrad Vajnar faced off against the No. 2 ranked Matt Malcolm, falling by TF in 3:38, with a score of 18-2.

In 174, Marty Verhaeghe gave the Tigers’ momentum as he fought for the win. Verhaeghe fell by decision 6-3.

Another close matchup, Aryus Jones faced No. 4 Anthony Mancini, and fell by decision 4-3.

In the 197 weight class, Jordan Davis gave the Tigers their second win of the night, pinning the Lopers’ Andrew Demos in 4:19.

In the final matchup of the night, AJ Cooper faced No. 5 ranked Jarrod Hinrichs in the 285 weight class. Cooper lost by decision with a score of 10-4.
