The Hays High School boys’ basketball team struggled to start its third-place game against Lawrence Free State on Saturday afternoon at the HHS gym.
The Indians had a hard time scoring against the Free State defense, only managing two points in the first quarter. That spelled doom as HHS fell 46-31.
The second quarter started with the Indians trailing 10-2. Going into the locker room, Hays High trailed Free State 26-11.
HHS continued its struggles to find a way around Free State’s defense, only scoring four points in the third quarter while trailing 40-15 entering the final eight minutes.
The Indians tried to rally, scoring 16 points in the fourth quarter but it wasn’t enough.
The Indians’ record is now 1-2. They will host Colby on Dec. 17.
TJ Nunnery was the only Indian in double digits, finishing with 11 points.
