BY JOHN CARTER JR
The SWIPE Out Hunger event, hosted by the Global Leadership Project in partnership with Numana, is happening this Saturday, October 19th at Forsyth Library from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The events goal is to help feed the hungry through creating food packages to ship to those in need. TMN recently had the opportunity to speak with Student Coordinator of the Global leadership Project Alex Kultgen about the event and its development.
John Carter JR (JCJ)- What was the planning for this event like?
Alex Kultgen (AK)- Planning for SWIPE is equal parts chaos and equal parts fun. I love being able to tell people about SWIPE and hear students say they either want to participate or have in the past and have loved it. While recruiting over 140 volunteers can be extremely challenging, it’s all worth it come the day of SWIPE.
JCJ- What are the purposes and goals of the event?
AK- The purpose of the event is to make a difference by feeding the hungry. Numana has a saying, “Give food. Give hope.” And that truly is what SWIPE does, we are able to make a direct impact in someone else’s life by packaging these meals. This year our goal is 30,000 meals and these meals will be sent to El Salvador.
JCJ- Who is your organization wanting to impact in this event?
AK- The Global Leadership Project is wanting to impact those who are going hungry by serving them and our FHSU students by teaching them to be more empathetic and understanding of the world around them.
JCJ- If anyone would like to be involved what should they do?
AK- Unfortunately, our registration is full now, but if you would like to get more involved with the Global Leadership Project follow us Instagram at thegloballeadershipproject, Twitter at @GLP_FHSU, and on Facebook by liking The Global Leadership Project page. We are also looking for fellows in the Center for Civic Leadership. If you are interested email glp@fhsu.edu or ccl@fhsu.edu.
JCJ- Will there be more events like these and what can we look forward to seeing from the Global Leadership Project?
AK- The Global Leadership Project does several events throughout the year like this. Our next major event is Finding Common Ground. We have partnered with the Student Government Association, the American Democracy Project, and Dr. Terry’s Social Justice class to help educate people on the racial inequalities which are seen in society today. Finding Common Ground will take place on November 20th from 7 p.m.to 9 p.m. in the Black & Gold room.
