American Red Cross on Campus

STORY BY SINTIA JIMENEZ

ALPHA KAPPA PSI will be teaming up with the Hays American Red Cross donation center to assist students and community members to save lives. Tabling will continue tomorrow at the Memorial Union for their Annual Blood Drive. This is an opportunity to sign up on the way to class.

According to Nancy Mendoza, Vice President of Administration at FHSU, the mission is clear. Since 2009 the American Red Cross has lost over 1 million donors and the need for blood donations is in high demand.

“Donating 1 pint of blood can save up to 3 lives,” Mendoza said. “The American Red Cross and those in need are grateful for your donations.”

The Red Cross also has an app, Blood Donor. This app is very helpful for current and future donations by allowing the user to choose a location nearby as well as booking appointments within the app. The mobile application also contains other features. Students who are curious about their blood type can easily find out within the app.

The only wait time is the time for processing information during your first visit. The final grain of importance of this app would be that by tracking where donations go, the Red Cross is able to provide real-time information about every student’s individual contributions while providing the ability to form teams within. It is very interesting to note that Fort Hays State University formed a team within this application.

The Annual Blood Drive is an event that demonstrates the cause and effect our good will has upon those in dire need. By using technology, the Red Cross is connecting students from FHSU to the world beyond.
