Royals fall to Blue Jays in final game of series

BY HAILEY CHAPMAN

The Kansas City Royals fell in their final game against the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday evening. The loss was the biggest run deficit of the series, losing 11-4.

In Game 1, the Royals lost 6-2, Game 2 was 6-5, but came out victorious in Game 3, 7-6. The Royals were looking for a series split but fell short, moving their record to 29-56.

Toronto was able to put up eight runs in the first three innings before KC was able to respond. Starting pitcher Glenn Sparkman struggled to find his stride on the mound as Toronto drove in eight runs off the right-hander. On the day, Sparkman allowed nine hits with one walk and one strikeout, but the damage came with the three home runs he gave up.

The bottom of the second was huge for the Blue Jays as both Teoscar Hernandez and Freddy Galvis sent solo shots over the center field fence. The bats were rolling as they totaled five runs in the second. In the third inning, Galvis carried the momentum with another home run.

In the fourth inning, the Royals were able to rally for four runs of their own to cut the deficit in half.

The ball was turned over to Bryan Flynn with hopes of holding off the Toronto offense. Flynn was able to work through four innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Wily Peralta came in for the final inning and allowed two hits in his closing effort.

Toronto doubled the Royals hits with 18 on the day. The nine hits Kansas City was able to earn came from offensive leaders Whit Merrifield (2-for-4), Nicky Lopez (1-for-4), Hunter Dozier (2-for-3), Jorge Soler (1-for-4), Cheslor Cuthbert (1-for-4), Humberto Arteaga (1-for-4) and Martin Maldonado (1-for-4).

The Royals return home for a three-game series against the Cleveland Indians tonight.
