Plenty of options for FHSU students to enjoy night life

By TRYSTAN KNAPP

Night classes, club meetings and late nights out with friends are what many students partake in each week. These evenings and late nights mean students stay up later to join in on fun occasions on campus and around Hays.

Nightlife can be beneficial to some in college, but the late events can take a toll on a student’s ability to function on a day-to-day basis. With many pros and cons, is nightlife in college important in student life?

College nightlife is when a lot of exciting events happen. Many Greek organizations and campus clubs choose to host events and meetings in the evenings so members can attend without having to interfere with classes. Sporting events are also mainly scheduled in the evenings to not only bring in students, but others from the Hays community. These events on campus can help students from making unsafe decisions, which is why Fort Hays State offers many evening and night events each week.

Students can find weekly event happenings on the University Calendar. From life groups, karaoke nights and intramural activities, students have plenty of options to choose from.

“It is very important for FHSU to continually provide opportunities for our students to get involved on campus both day and night,” said Joey Linn, vice president of Student Affairs at Fort Hays State. “We provide an extensive number of programs and events that are entertaining, educational and fun.”

Linn is passionate about making FHSU a safe and fun place for students when it comes to events on campus.

He also highlighted how important it is to be involved on campus.

“At the end of the day, the research shows that the more involved students are on a university campus, the higher the graduation rates and student success — and that’s what it’s all about,” Linn said.

Other than on campus nightlife, the city of Hays offers many different evening events for students to join in on. Many students choose to visit downtown restaurants, bars and shops since they’re still close to the Fort Hays State campus. A problem, though, with off-campus nightlife is the age needed to partake in some events in Hays. Those age 21 and older have better access to events and places rather than those younger than the legal drinking age. That can lead to students making decisions that can lead them to trouble.

To have a healthy college experience, students are encouraged to attend social events to find new friends and to have a breather from homework and studying. At FHSU, there are plenty of events to get involved in to keep students excited and away from trouble.
