Track and field travels to Maryville for MIAA indoor meet

Another championship season is upon us as the Fort Hays State track and field teams travel to Maryville, Mo for the 2019 edition of the MIAA Indoor Championships. The Tigers prepare for a tough weekend of competition, bringing in multiple provisional and strong performances on their resume. The meet will run Friday – Sunday (Feb. 22 – 24) at Hughes Fieldhouse on the campus of Northwest Missouri State.

The Tigers are back at the championships following a sixth place finish in 2018 for both the men and women. The FHSU men claimed three titles and captured five All-MIAA mentions. For the women, the distance medley relay team earned first place and three events received All-MIAA honors.

This year, Fort Hays State hopes to add more titles to their 2019 haul. The Tiger men have multiple athletes on the NCAA DII Indoor performance list heading into the championships. Malcom Gardner sits at 49th in the 200-meters with his time of 21.73. Brett Meyer appears on two lists, coming in at No. 22 in the 800-meters with a time of 1:52.17, and fourth place in the mile at 4:04.23. Kolt Newell comes in at No. 22 in the high jump with his provisional of 6 feet, 9 inches. Ryan Stanley is No. 24 in the pole vault at 16 feet, 0 inches. Coming in at No. 28 on the heptathlon with 4,914 points.

On the women’s side, four Tigers appear on the performance list. Mirena Goncalves comes in at No. 36 in the 5,000-meters at 17:21.89. Halie Turner sits at No. 52 in the pole vault with her mark of 11 feet, 9 inches. Rohey Singhateh is No. 15 in the triple jump with her distance of 39 feet, 8 inches. Rounding out the appearances for the Tigers is Kayla Smith at No. 46 in the triple jump as well with her jump of 38 feet, 3 inches.
