Over the weekend, the Fort Hays State men’s track and field team headed in separate directions with some traveling to Seward, Neb for the Concordia Indoor Invite and the others to MIAA opponent Pittsburg State for the Gorilla Classic. The weekend brought various personal bests and top finishes for the Tigers to bring back home.
Gorilla Indoor Classic
At the Fourth Annual Indoor Gorilla Classic, personal records were hit by the Tigers and strong finishes help cap off the weekend. One of the personal best was earned by Layton Werth who finished in eighth place in the 5,000-meters with a time of 14:49.38. Justin Moore bettered his record by placing fourth in the 3,000-meters with a time of 8:40.59, followed by Alex Barbosa in the same event with his personal record setting time of 8:42.75 to put him in sixth place. Among the other notable performers was a tenth place finish for Oscar Carmona in the mile run with a time of 4:16.10.
Concordia Indoor Invite
Kaleb Crum started out strong for the Tigers in Seward as he won the 5,000-meters with a time of 15:54.13. Kolt Newell brought home another first place finish following his win in the high jump. Newell earned a mark of 6 feet, 7 inches for the victory.
Devin Berens added a top-ten finish to his resume following a 10th place finish in the 200 meters with a time of 23.14. Jake Faerber came in ninth place in the 400 meters following a clocked time of 52.27. The 1,000-meters brought two top-ten finishes for FHSU with Jason Irwin coming in fourth at 2:38.29, and Robert Loeffler finishing in eighth at 2:42.04.
The men’s mile saw a seventh place finish for Luke Oatney with his time of 4:45.23. Franklin Peter and Abraham Garcia finished in the second and third spots the 3,000-meters with times of 8:57.99 and 9:59.52, respectively. Michael Eisenbarth claimed a personal record in the 5,000-meters with his third place time of 16:01.62.
Lucas Broxterman finished in third place in the high jump with his height of 6 feet, 3 inches. Ryan Stanley took a sixth place height in the pole vault with his 15 feet, 1 inch performance. In the long jump, Broxterman took fifth place at 22 feet 1 inches, with Matthew Pieper close behind in sixth place at 21 feet, 8 inches. The shot put saw two top-ten finishes with Gilbert Peters in seventh place at 48 feet, 2 inches and Sam Garrison finishing in ninth place at 45 feet, 8 inches.
Next up, the Tigers compete in their final weekend before the MIAA Indoor Conference Championships. FHSU heads to Nebraska for another weekend for the Nebraska Tune-Up in Lincoln, Neb.
