Goncalves sets new school record

KEARNEY & LINCOLN, Neb. – The Fort Hays State women’s track and field team split up over the weekend to compete in two meets in Nebraska. With a handful heading to Kearney and the others traveling to Lincoln, the Tigers earned strong marks throughout the two-day events.

Mirena Goncalves led the way for the women as she set a new school record in the 3,000-meters following her time of 9:58.50. Goncalves placed fifth in the event, breaking the two-year FHSU record set on the same track by Mick Krzesinski.

Yessenia Gonzales captured a high finish in the 5,000-meters with her time of 17:43.59. Gonzales earned a new personal record in her fourth place performance. Grace Buessing was the other placer for the Tigers in Lincoln after she claimed a 26th place finish in the 800-meters with a time of 2:21.35.

In Kearney, the Tigers were strongly represented with their performances. Mattie Rossi got FHSU started by claiming second place in the pentathlon with 3,059 points. In the weight throw, two Tigers finished in the top-ten as Logan Batchman took fifth place with a distance of 43 feet, 4 inches while Macey Steckel earned eighth with a throw of 34 feet, inches. Batchman also won the shot put in Kearney with her throw of 38 feet, inches.

Summer Kragel took the high jump event with her jump of 5 feet, 3 inches, with teammate Haley Jones coming in fourth place at 5 feet 1 inches. Rohey Singhateh took third in the long jump with her distance of 17 feet, 6 inches. In the triple jump, Singhateh claimed second place with 37 feet, 1 inches.

In the 60-meter hurdles, Peri Lange took second place with a time of 9.27 followed by Rossi in third place at 9.32. Lindsay Shupe won the 60-meters with her time of 7.78. In the 800-meter run, three Tigers finished in the top-five with Carson Pierce in second (2:28.21), Averi Wilson in fourth (2:33.79) and Tessa Durnell in fifth (2:36.76).

Abigail Stewart claimed the 3,000-meters with her time of 11:17.89. The final event of the night went to the Tigers as the group of Lange, Rossi, Lyric Holman and Shupe won the 4×400 relay with a time of 4:05.89.

The Tigers next travel to Seward, Neb for the Concordia Invite on Feb. 8.
