Soup ‘R Bowl serves as tasty fundraiser

By TRYSTAN KNAPP

The week might have started off in a chilly, dreary state, but there’s an opportunity to finish the weekend on a much warmer note.

The 22nd annual Soup ‘R Bowl benefiting the Humane Society of the High Plains will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at the Unrein Building at the Ellis County Fairgrounds. The HSHP invites people to help raise funds for medical treatment and care for animals at the event.

Tickets for the event with be $7 in advanced or can be purchased for $8 at the door.

This year, 14 chefs will be serving soup at the Soup ‘R Bowl. Alicia Tripler, president of the HSHP board, said the number of chefs throughout the years has been consistent, but the event continues to grow in popularity throughout the community.

For the 22nd year, the group is hoping to raise more than $8,000 from the event.

Amy Jensen, representing Professor’s in Hays, said the soups they are offering at the event are made with their homegrown, fresh ingredients.

“We try to create with what we have when it’s in season, and everything is always made with love,” she said.

Attendees will be supplied with dinnerware to sample and eat different soups, and they will be given tickets to vote for the best soup they taste. At 1 p.m. when the tasting is finished, tickets at each of the tables will be counted to award the best soup and its chef with the Golden Ladle.

Attendees will have the chance to win door prizes, shirts and gift certificates. Cookbooks also will be available for purchase.
