SGA holds weekly meeting; discusses food and housing rates

STORY BY DANIEL SAENZ

Last Thursday, the Student Government Association held their weekly meeting, which started out by introducing a fun activity for no shave November in which bearded students could drop by the SGA office and take pictures. A student, Austin Krejdl, gave a rather straightforward speech on why his experience in various other organizations made him a suitable candidate for being a student senator. Soon after, the meeting delved into the more arduous, professional discussions. They talked about some of the highlights from the recent Board of Regents meeting that was held in Emporia. In particular, during the Fiscal Affairs and Audit Standing Committee, all of the universities’ housing and food service rates were read for the first time. They are for the next academic/fiscal year.

Each school has their own unique approach. SGA President Adam Schibi states, “We increase our amounts based upon the Higher Education Pricing Index (HEPI). This is similar to the Consumer Price Index (CPI), but is adjusted to items seen more frequently in higher education, such as construction. Additionally, the Students’ Advisory Committee, made up of the Student Body Presidents, talked about how enrollment numbers are being reported and what our plan will be for Higher Ed Day- more information to come.”

Apart from this, PGAV Architects from Kansas City and St. Louis, was chosen to be the architect for the Center for Student Success-they also helped design the Center for Applied Technology and Hammond Hall.

President Schibi went on to elaborate on what this means for the students on campus.

“Students need to know how increases are calculated, and that these numbers are not arbitrarily pulled out of the air. Higher Ed Day information will soon be circulating, so all students should be on the lookout,” he said.

All students can go to Higher Ed Day, the evening of February 11-12th. SGA officials are available for more information on this event.

The Student Government Association will meet again this evening at 7 p.m.
