Only a few days remain before debates featuring candidates for the Ellis County Commission and the 111th State House of Representatives races.
The Fort Hays State University Student Government Association, in conjunction with the Hays Area Chamber of Commerce, American Democracy Project, Department of Political Science, Docking Institute of Public Affairs, Tiger Media Network and Midwest Energy are hosting two debates this fall between candidates for the county commission and 111th District races.
SGA, ADP and their partners are excited to provide the important civic engagement opportunity for the students of Fort Hays State, and, moreover, for the greater Hays area. For those unable to attend, the debates will be live-streamed on tigermedianet.com and Facebook. The two debates also will be broadcast on Eagle Cable Channel 17 and Nex-Tech Cable Channel 102.
The debates for the 111th State House District and Ellis County Commission are Oct. 16 in the Black and Gold Room of the Memorial Union. The county commission debate begins at 6 p.m., with the 111th debate scheduled for approximately 7 p.m.
Candidates for the Ellis County Commission include Republican Butch Schlyer, Democrat Chris Rorabaugh and Independent John Walz.
Incumbent Democrat Eber Phelps faces Republican Barbara Wasinger in the 111th District race.
Audience members will have the opportunity to interact and pose questions to the candidates in each debate. Audience members also will have the chance to interact with others through Twitter during the events.
