Fort Hays State University has made it a habit of preparing students for life beyond earning a degree.
The Career Services department of FHSU has designed an event to help students prepare for the next level — “Making Your Mark,” an assembly of scheduled events beginning Sunday during FHSU Career Readiness Week 2018.
“The main objective of next week will be to help students practice and prepare for job searches,” said Karen McCullough, director of Career Services. “We want to make them feel as comfortable and confident as possible while entering their desired career.”
The Tailored for Tigers Open House will begin Career Readiness Week from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday in Room 39 in Forsyth Library. The event offers refreshments and a tour of the clothing closet that is filled with professional attire to give students an idea of appropriate clothing to wear during an interview.
On Monday, the etiquette dinner will be at 7 p.m. in the Fort Hays Ballroom in the Memorial Union. It costs $10 to attend the event and network reception.
“I am ecstatic with the increase in student participation in the Etiquette Dinner from last time we held this event,” McCullough said. “Many RSVPs have already been made that surpass last year’s numbers.”
Mccullough believes scheduling the events to occur all in one week will increase student participation.
“Last year, we scattered these events throughout the year,” she said. “I believe if we delegate one week in the semester to hold these events, more students would be interested in attending them.
Tuesday’s events focus on personal branding and networking. From 9 a.m. to noon, a Personal Branding Conference will take place in the Fort Hays Ballroom. Students will be able to practice interview skills by attending the Mock Interview sessions from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the ballroom.
At 6:30 p.m., students can attend the Networking Reception in the Eagle Communications Hall in Robbins Center.
“I think some students could use guidance on how to network themselves while they are still in school,” McCullough said. “We are eager to meet students and help them obtain these skills.”
The last day of Career Readiness Week will allow students to give themselves the professional edge as an undergrad. All events Wednesday will be at the Memorial Union. Beginning at 9:30 a.m., students can attend the Career Readiness Conference in the Pioneer Room until 1 p.m.
The Study Abroad Fair will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Sunset Lounge. Lastly, the Career and Internship Fair will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Black and Gold Room.
“We have seen so much excitement from students as the event nears,” McCullough said. “We are just as excited to help FHSU students in the areas they need in order to become successful after graduation.”
