UAB’s Super Spectacular Awesome Week

BY LEXI GROSS

From April 9th to April 13th, the FHSU University Activities Board hosted the Super Spectacular Awesome Week! All week long events and activities were held across campus for students to interact and enjoy some out-of-class fun! A free event was held each day that was open to all FHSU students and faculty. Throughout the week students could even win special prizes and be placed in a drawing just by swiping their Tiger ID.

To start off their week, students had the chance to hear singer and songwriter, Amanda Vernon. Amanda is an up and coming full-time recording artist who calls her style soulful pop. They listened to this independent recording artist in Cody Commons while they received hot drinks and pastries. They also handed out free t-shirts and cups!

On Tuesday, students were able to experience spray paint art in the quad. The spray paint artist was done by an artist named Joe and his team from Florida to perform their unique style of art. They produced paintings on a 5×7 canvas with spray paint. Other tools they used involved plastic bags, paper, pot lids, and a putty knife. Students had their choice of scenery whether it was a city, beach, space, or the woods. Despite the strong smell of spray paint, this was a show within itself!

The excitement continued Tuesday night! The UAB brought in comedian and hypnotist, Chris Jones, who has actually made an appearance on America’s Got Talent and travels across the country to perform for college campuses. Chris put on a delightful show not only hypnotising volunteers but the audience as well. The night was filled with many laughs as the audience watched students perform tasks they would most likely never do awake.

Wednesday, April 11th, students were able to unleash their creative side between classes. On this day, the UAB hosted canvas art in the Memorial Union. Students were given art supplies and a free canvas to create anything they wanted to. It was a great relaxing method for students and to express their creativity.

Thursday was a famous day for most FHSU students. On this day the annual “Stuff a Tiger Day” was hosted in the Black and Gold room at Memorial Union. This is an event held every year wear students are given a tiger and then they can fill their tiger with stuffing and even dress it in a UAB t-shirt! This event is very popular with students because it is a unique event that promotes school spirit and helps interact.

Finally, on Friday, the UAB was giving away free liquid nitrogen ice cream in the union. The process is simple: put cream in a bowl, add the ingredients, and the blast it with liquid nitrogen. Beautiful clouds of vapor billow from the bowl, roll across the table. The liquid nitrogen freezes it so fast that the ice crystals don’t get a chance to grow and the resulting ice cream is the smoothest, creamiest and freshest you’ll ever experience. Enjoying a creamy delicious treat was also a way they were able to promote their big “Tigers Got Talent” showcase.

Friday night, in the Beach Schmidt auditorium, the “Tigers Got Talent” talent show also took place filled with multiple acts. The students performing in the show went through an audition process back in February and were selected to take place in the final show for a chance to win huge prizes. Prizes included cash prizes, gifts and the chance to have your very own show next year as part of a UAB event. It was hosted by comedian, Ivan Pecel. Students in attendance said they had a blast and were in awe by all performances.

The University of Activities Board will host a Dive in Movie next Friday, April 27th at 7 p.m. in Cunningham Hall. Enjoy watching a movie all while floating in the comfort of an inner tube. And finally, the UAB has rescheduled their Jammin in To Summer festival to Saturday, April 28th from 4-8 p.m. in the Gross Memorial parking lot. Enjoy carnival rides and games as well as music, magic shows and food vendors all from the Hays area!
