2018-19 SGA President and Vice President Candidates Announced

BY JADEN MOUNT

Election season at Fort Hays State University Student Government Association (SGA) is underway as candidates begin campaigning for their intended positions.

A Candidate Meeting was held Tuesday, March 27, in the Center for Student Involvement (CSI) Office where all candidates were given the go-ahead for launching their individual campaigns. Amongst the candidates was the only president and vice president ticket, Adam Schibi and Kayelani Kirschbaum.

Schibi is a senator representing the Robbins College of Business and Entrepreneurship and has taken an active role in a majority of business student organizations, such as Alpha Kappa Psi. He feels his experience with those organizations and more has made himself qualified for the position of SGA President.

“Over my time here at Fort Hays, I’ve been able to get as engaged with students as possible,” said Schibi. “[I’ve] Been in various organizations, not just only within my major, but also in different organizations representing different groups of students.”

Kirschbaum hails from a very different academic field compared to her running mate. She represents the Werth College of Science, Technology, and Mathematics as the 2017-18 SGA Legislative Affairs Director. Kirschbaum reports her leadership experience in high school and in college also qualify her for the position of SGA Vice President.

Kirschbaum states because of her involvement, “…I’ve gained knowledge on how to represent students, how to talk to professionals…I want to be a voice for students and continue to improve and grow Fort Hays.”

The two current senators will be campaigning on a three-point platform; Affordability, Community, and Transparency.

“We really strive to keep Fort Hays affordable for all students…,” said Kirschbaum “For community, we are really hoping we can work with making more partnerships and doing more mentorships here in Hays…for transparency, our hope is to have really strong line of communication between the administration and the students.”

The ticket candidates will be present at the SGA hosted President and Vice President Debate on Tuesday, April 3rd, in Cody Commons of the Memorial Union at 6 pm. The event is open to the public and FHSU students are encouraged to attend.
