Jordan and Tina from Hays Med have some advice for students to be successful with the fair.
Jordan: “Even if you’re not sure what you want to do, come with questions and an open mind. Don’t walk around aimlessly. Stop at the booths that you normally wouldn’t think twice about, even to just ask questions, practice networking, and learn more. You never know what they could have for you.”
Tina: “The university does a good job of bringing all of the company and representatives in. You can at least see it as a learning experience.”

Tori Hatzenbuehler is a senior PR and Advertising major from Superior, Nebraska. She has plenty of tips for getting ready for internships and career fairs. “Come prepared! Bring resumes, business cards if you have them, dress nicely- business casual. There are tips for all of these at Career Services. Be friends with Career Services, too! They’re here to help you, and they know what they’re doing. Be open-minded and confident- you can do it!”

Karen and Nikki from Career Service work so hard to put events like this, and many others together every semester. There are a lot of events that they hold to help students prepare for their fairs, and general professional development. “We host job search workshops, Resume Madness, tabling at the union, mock interviews, and class presentations. We also invite you to come in to the office (appointment preferred) to have your resume or cover letter reviewed.” (Continued on to next photo)

(Continued from the previous photo) They also had some benchmark steps for students to strive for through every year of the degree process:
“As freshmen, there are two different kinds of students. Some students are solid in their path, they know exactly what they want to do. Those students should build their resumes, and start having them reviewed. They should learn about jobs in their field and how to qualify for those positions. Those that are not sure should look into academic advising and career exploration to test for their likes and strengths, to at least get an idea for where to look. There is nothing wrong with either type of student! But either way, they should come into the office and introduce themselves to us, and get familiar with our services.” (Continued on to next photo)

(Continued from the previous photo) “Sophomores should be looking at similar steps as freshmen, but also adding practicing their interviewing skills, and becoming more professional. This is the time when you want to start networking, thinking about jobs, and looking into internships. Definitely take advantage of us here in Career Services.
“Juniors will take all previous steps and really start putting them into action. This will be the best time to actually begin participating in internships and narrowing the career path, or learning about your options down the road. If you haven’t already, you want to build your professional portfolio and start gaining experience in your field as much as possible.
“Lastly, seniors are going to really starting to look at and apply for jobs. They should polish everything they’ve worked on from previous years- resumes, cover letters, letters of recommendation, networking, and practicing interviewing.”

Karen from Career Services had some advice for the best way to prepare for their internship fairs. “A week before the fair, you will want to double check your resume. Get multiple opinions if you can. Start thinking about how you will introduce yourself, and even practicing your handshake with a friend will help you make a great first impression. As the day of rolls around, you’ll want to pick out your professional clothing. Check out our handout on the FHSU website if you need some inspiration. You should print out copies of your resume, and do some research on the companies. Know who you want to meet with, know about them, think of how you will benefit their company. Be able to explain why you would be a good fit for them. It is also good to develop some questions for the companies; they can be general for everyone, or specific for each company. Lastly, what will really set you apart from everyone else: following up. Within a week after the fair, you’ll want to send the companies you spoke with a thank you letter or follow up in some way. Thank them for their time, ask more questions or for information, anything that reminds them- in a good way- who you are, and why they should want you. It might be helpful to get their contact information, or a business card while you’re there with them.”

Alex is a senior in Informatics with a Media Studies focus. He emphasizes the benefits of attending the fairs and other events by Career Services. “You get exposure to different careers available in the area, which is always a good start. You also can actually interact with and make an impression on the people who could jump-start your career. It’s an easy networking opportunity; you might as well make the best of it, and your time at FHSU.”
