After losing 82-37 to perennial powerhouse UCONN last Wednesday in an exhibition contest, the Fort Hays State women’s basketball team was back in action on Monday, November 6, against the Kansas State Wildcats.
The Tigers fought hard in the first half, only being outscored 13-10 in the first quarter, and going into halftime with a 30-21 deficit. On Monday, the third quarter proved to be the difference, as Kansas State outscored FHSU 19-8. The Tigers were down 49-29 entering the final quarter and the Wildcats went on to win 61-46.
For the Tigers, Kacey Kennett and Taylor Rolfs each scored 10 points. Tatyana Legette was one point shy of a double-double with nine points and 14 rebounds.
For the Wildcats, Peyton Williams led all scorers with 20 points. Kayla Goth added nine points and seven rebounds. Kaylee Page had nine rebounds of her own.
Kansas State shot 37.1% from the field, while FHSU was held to just 28.3%. The Tigers also had 16 turnovers, no fastbreak points, and only two points off turnovers which proved to be the difference.
The Tigers will now return home before travelling to Fayette, Iowa to begin the regular season on Friday, November 10, against Upper Iowa. The Lady Tigers defeated Upper Iowa, 82-56, a season ago. The Wildcats will also begin the season on Friday, with a home opener against Stephen F. Austin.
