Around the Corner: Guns on a Public Campus

Whenever the topic of guns comes up, many individuals automatically assume you are either for or against the 2nd Amendment. More specifically, if you are anywhere on the left side of the political spectrum, you are anti-gun rights. Whereas if you are on the ride side, you are pro-gun rights. When politics are mixed up in any conversation, things are bound to get messy.

It is my personal belief that Americans have the right to bear arms, as stated in our constitution, but like most things in our society, there must be laws and rules to protect those who prefer not to practice this right.

I will never own a handgun. That is my choice. It is not because I am anti-gun, but because I have no interest in owning one. In consideration to my peers, particularly here on the Fort Hays State University campus, I do not care if they own a firearm. However, I do care if the person that is owning the firearm is not mentally stable or has a negative history of violence.

At the end of the day, no matter who we are or what position we may hold in society, it is human nature to do what is best for us as individuals. Since I am new to this university, I don’t know a lot of my fellow peers and I don’t know their history or background. Normally, I would never be afraid of that, but the idea that there are people here carrying firearms in a concealed fashion worries me.

I am less worried if they have legally obtained the weapon and have a concurrent concealed carry permit, but who’s to say the student sitting next to you has met all that criteria.
Please take note: I am not trying to make you suspicious of your fellow FHSU Tiger students, but I believe the possibility is worth careful and considerate concern.

I hope that my worries are subsided as time moves on. I can only hope that those who own firearms are responsible and considerate individuals.

Sound Off!
