OKLAHOMA CITY – Fort Hays State led twice but ultimately fell in the final game of a three-game series at Oklahoma Christian on Saturday (Mar. 4) by a score of 11-6. FHSU fell to 5-11 overall, while Oklahoma Christian went to 12-9.
Veronica Knittig drove in four of the six runs for the Tigers. She had an RBI double in the first to give FHSU an early 1-0 lead, then she capped a five-run second inning for the Tigers with a 3-run home run. A Bailey Kennedy two-out RBI single provided the first two runs of the second for FHSU before a Lily Sale single set up Knittig’s homer.
But the Tigers could not hold on to a 6-4 lead after an inning and a half. Hailey Chapman struggled in the pitching circle for the second straight day, allowing eight runs (six earned) on six hits and three walks in just an inning and a third. The Eagles plated four in the first and four in the second to erase both Tiger leads. They tacked on three more in the fourth against Carrie Clarke, who threw the final 4.2 innings allowing eight hits.
After plating six runs against Oklahoma Christian starter Kaylie Upton, who went just an inning and two-thirds, the Tigers could not solve Madison Hagood. In 5.1 innings of relief, Hagood picked up the win by allowing just two hits and a walk with five strikeouts.
The Tigers head back on the road Tuesday (Mar. 7) for a doubleheader at Newman University in Wichita, Kan. Games are set to begin at 2 pm.
