HAYS, Kan. – The Fort Hays State baseball team continues a seven-game homestand Wednesday (Feb. 15) when Oklahoma-Panhandle State comes to town. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Larks Park.
After sweeping New Mexico Highlands last weekend, the Tigers are now 3-3 on the season. The Aggies are 2-4 this year, including a 0-2 mark against NCAA Division II opponents.
The Tigers are 28-3 all-time against the Aggies, including a perfect 15-0 at Larks Park. This is the first time OPSU has traveled to play in Hays since 2005. Fort Hays State won the only meeting last season, 10-4, in Goodwell, Okla.
The bats came alive for the Tigers last weekend, totaling 44 hits in the three wins. FHSU looks to keep the offensive outburst going against a Cowboys team that gives up nearly 10 hits per game. OPSU’s team ERA is just 3.60, but 15 of the 35 runs given up this season have been unearned.
Ty Redington leads the team with a .429 batting average, ranking eighth in the conference with eight runs scored so far this season. In all, six Tigers are hitting north of .300. Dayton Pomeroy is tied for second in the league with three home runs, going deep once in each game against NMHU. The junior has reached base safely in five-straight games. Alex Ruxlow tossed another effective start last weekend, leading the Tigers staff with a 2.61 ERA. Several bullpen arms have yet to give up an earned run this season. Sam Capps has posted an ERA of 1.69 after two appearances.
Chris Schaer is one of five Aggies hitting better than .300, recording a .471 batting average through six games. Interestingly, the freshman has yet to score a run after reaching base 13 times. A pair of pitchers anchor the starting rotation for OPSU with Samuel Beattie and Dallas Guerrero combining to giving up just four runs through 24 innings of work while striking out 27.
