With the start of Black History Month, students have many opportunities to get involved on campus with events hosted by the Black Student Union (BSU). These events are put on to highlight key moments throughout black culture and black history as well as celebrate the advancements made as a country throughout the years.
The Black Student Union is a group dedicated to serving, educating, and engaging African American students and African American allies at Fort Hays State University. Their main goal is to be a place of support and a home away from home as students navigate to graduation.
Each week in February, the BSU will put on different events and have many opportunities to learn about black history in the union and around campus. The events are listed below:
Memorial Union- Display Wall- February 6th-14th, February 20th-28th
Students are welcomed to engage and educate themselves about the black hidden historical figures whom contributed to today’s America. The listed dates are when the display table will be available for viewing.
Memorial Union- Student Health Center- February 14th- 8:00am-4:00pm-Appointments Encouraged
BSU has partnered with the Student Health center to provide free testing for all students. Students will be able to choose from one of the following tests:
-Lipid Panel (Must fast 8-12 hours prior)
-Sickle Cell; or
-HIV/ Syphilis

McMindes 2R- 6:00pm-8:30pm- BSU will host a movie night and Discussion Panel following.
Join Black Student Union for a screening of “13th” Ava DuVernay’s documentary on the connection between the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment and the modern practice of mass incarnation.
Memorial Union- Black and Gold Room-Pass the Peace Soul Food Dinner- 6:00pm-8:30pm
Travel our nations rich cultures through southern style comfort foods at the annual dinner formal to welcome Black History Month with presentations and performances by various organizations in an effort to unite our community while honoring accomplishments of those in our community.
The Black Student Union values the attendance of students and members of the community and welcomes everyone of all creeds. If you are interested in attending meetings, you can meet in McMindes 2R at 7:00pm every week this month and every other week throughout the rest of the school year.
