KFHS Radio Celebrates College Radio Day

By:  Sophi Thompson

On November 4th, students that are part of FHSU’s campus radio station, KFHS, celebrated National College Radio Day. Students that were in bands or simply solo acts on campus, were asked to perform in Cody Commons to showcase their musical talents.

5 bands and performers played everything from covers to originals. Of those 5 were Nathan Dozier, who played some acoustic cover songs on his guitar and his trusty ukulele that you will typically see him carry around campus.

Fact and Friction, a new pop-punk band to the Hays area consisting of Ryne Timken on vocals and lead guitar, Chase Legleiter on rhythm guitar, Logan Harmon on the bass, and Sophia Thompson on the drums, seemed to get the almost quiet crowd rocking. The band played all originals expect for their encore song where the crowd sang along to, Killing in The Name by Rage Against the Machine.

The next performer JusMax, spit some sick beats as he rapped to all of his own originals. JusMax or more commonly known as Isaiah Maxi also plays for FHSU’s football team as a wide receiver.

Up next was Hannah Norris and The Band, an alternative/rock band, who normally performs electrically, performed acoustically this time. The band consists of the 3 people however since they were playing acoustically only two of the three performed. Hannah Norris was on guitar and vocals, and August Phlieger on the cajon (a box-shaped percussion instrument, played by slapping the front or rear faces with the hands, fingers, or sometimes various implements such as brushes, mallets, or sticks).

And last but not least, the funky alternative band, Big Mama Flouride. The band consists of Ken Moreno lead guitar/backup vocals, Garret on the bass/lead vocals, and Brayden on the drums. This quirky trio played all originals and was very entertaining to watch.

Along with the musical showcase, in between acts prizes were given away the lucky members of the audience. Prizes included free food from McDonalds and Taco Shop along with free College Radio Day t-shirts.

If you haven’t seen any of these bands or performers live I highly recommend checking them out. All of them were entertaining to watch and the music was superb.
