EMPORIA, Kan. – The Fort Hays State University men’s cross country team picked up its second win in eight days Friday evening (Sept. 23) at the Papa John’s Invitational, hosted by Emporia State University. The Tigers placed five runners in the top-11 spots to total 35 team points, 64 fewer than second-place Newman. This was the first collegiate race on the eight-kilometer course traversing the Emporia Municipal Golf Course.
Senior Troy Wineinger was the first Division II runner to the finish line, placing fifth with a time of 25:37.50. A trio of Tiger runners finished seventh through ninth, with Jacob Thomas leading the pack to the line in 25:59.34. Feysel Rahmeto (26:04.71) and Israel Barco (26:12.30) followed close behind, with Barco beating teammate Layton Werth to the line by just over one second (26:13.59, 11th).
Sixteen teams and 150 total runners took to the course, including 14 Tigers. 13 of the FHSU competitors finished in the top-third of the field.
The Tigers will return home for their final regular season meet in two weeks when they host the Tiger Open on Saturday, October 8 starting at 8:45 a.m. at the Sand Plum Nature Trail outside Victoria, Kan.
