Student Government Association Meeting, 3/31

This meeting of the Student Government Association was called to order on Thursday, March 31st, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. in the Black and Gold Room, Memorial Union on the campus of Fort Hays State University.

Executive Reports

President Gonzalez told senators that he presented two bills to the Senate Affairs Committee last week regarding changes to the constitution. Gonzalez also shared his condolences to the family of the FHSU student that passed away last week.

Legislative Affairs Director Brandt announced Thursday that she will be running for SGA president next year along Senator Agnew.

Campus Relations Director Vincent shared that she had the opportunity to meet with the Cultural Competency Task Force last week and that she will also be running for SGA president next year along with Senator Foster.

Community Relations Director Avalos announced that the date for the Big Event will be April 30th and that she is on the lookout for volunteers who would like to help with it.

Committee Reports

Appropriations Committee announced that they will have one bill up for first reading at the next meeting.

Senate Affairs Committee is working with President Gonzalez on making constitutional changes.

Student Relations and Involvement Committee reported that they are working on the Big Event after party, as well as finalizing projects for the Big Event.

Legislative and Political Action Committee is working on finalizing the fee review for next meeting. The committee also plans to have one bill up for first reading.

Elections Committee announced that the President/Vice President Forum will be held on Wednesday, April 6th at 5:00 p.m.

Open Forum

 

During open forum, Senator Reese thanked the university for all their support to the KAMS program during their time of loss. President Gonzalez added that he will work to provide the KAMS students with the help they need to cope with the tragedy.

Old Business

Bill 16/S/115 Appropriations had its second reading. Sen. Gress motioned to consider this bill, seconded by Sen. Devore. Sen. Agnew asked to have a representative of Christian students on campus to explain their request. A representative explained that 4 students will attend the trip, they will bring back more information about the Christian faith. They will also encourage others to attend the trip and learn more about themselves. Sen. Devore motioned to pass by unanimous consent, seconded by Sen. Gassman. The bill passed.

Bill 16/S/116 Appropriations had its second reading. Sen. Glassman motioned to consider the bill, seconded by Sen. Devore. Sen. Gassman asked to have a representative of Geo Club to explain their request. The representative said that with all the tours being made in Colorado, it will help the Geo Club have a better understanding of the industry. Bill 16/S116 passed by 25 votes.

Announcements

Sen. Garcia announced the Town Hall meeting on Tuesday at 7:00 to discuss the gun legislation.

Campus Relations Director, Vincent reminded everyone to sign up for the Big Event on April 30th.

President Gonzalez announced that SGA will be having Chamber Chats on Friday, April 1st in Cody Commons at 9:00 am.
