WICHITA, Kan. – Fort Hays State women’s javelin throwers Estefania Lopez and Madison Wolf wasted no time in claiming a spot in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships by throwing automatic qualifying marks at the Friends University Spring Open. They helped the FHSU women edge Friends University for the team title at the meet. FHSU won seven events individually, including two by distance runner Shea Bonine.

Lopez and Wolf already rank No. 1 and No. 3 in the nation after their efforts on Friday in Wichita. Lopez threw a distance of 166 feet, 1 inch to take the national lead early in the season, a spot she held for the majority of last season. Wolf threw a distance of 161 feet, 6 inches. Both were All-America performers last year for the Tigers.

Bonine won two events for the Tigers, claiming the 800 meters (2:27.40) and the 1500 meters (5:01.20). Micki Krzesinski won the 5000 meters in a time of 18:04.19.

Besides the javelin, FHSU won three other throwing events. Baja Robinson won the shot put (41 feet, 7.75 inches), Courtney Geiger won the discus (135 feet), and Rachael Monteil won the hammer throw (144 feet, 7 inches).

FHSU edged Friends in the team scoring, 72-70, as the rest of the field was far behind.
