WICHITA, Kan. – Fort Hays State had two athletes achieve provisional marks at the Friends University Spring Open on Friday (Mar. 25). Kolt Newell (high jump) and Jake Morrow (pole vault) achieved provisional marks and helped the Tigers to a first-place finish as a team. In all, the Tiger men won 11 events. Brett Meyer and TJ Dozier were champions of two events each.
Newell jumped 6 feet, 8.75 inches in the high jump to win the event by four inches. With his mark, Newell ranks sixth nationally on the performance list so far for the outdoor season. Morrow cleared a height of 15 feet, 7.25 inches in the pole vault to win the event. He ranks 15th on the national performance list.
Meyer was victorious in two mid-distance events, winning the 800 meters in 2:02.45 and the 1500 meters in 4:13.18. Dozier was champion of a pair of throwing events, winning the discus at 157 feet, 11 inches and the hammer throw at 149 feet, 6 inches.
Other champions for the Tigers included Brenner Wells in the javelin (191 feet, 4 inches), Christian Delaney in the shot put (48 feet, 8.25 inches), Kal Hamm in the 110 meter hurdles (15.38 seconds), Troy Wineinger in the 5000 meters (15:31.05) and the 4×400 meter relay team of Dillando Allotey, Rodrigo Alves, Israel Barco, and Meyer.
The Tiger men cruised in the team scoring with 86.5 points compared to second-place finisher Friends at 49.5 points.
