JEFFERSON, CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State defeated Lincoln on Friday (Mar. 25) by a score of 12-5 in the second game of an MIAA three-game series. The Tigers have won the first two games of the series and have now won three straight overall, improving to 12-14 overall and 6-9 in the MIAA. With the loss, Lincoln dropped to 1-24 overall and 0-15 in the MIAA.
The Tigers got on the board early and never looked back. With two on and one out in the first, Alex Weiss squared up a ball and sent it over the fence for a three-run home run. Lincoln responded in the second with two runs of their own, but that was as close as Lincoln came as FHSU broke the game open with a five-run third.
With two on, Joe Mapes sent the ball over the right field fence for the second three-run homer of the game for the Tigers. Trevor Hughes then pushed the Tiger lead to 8-2 with a two-out double that plated two more runs. The Tigers added another run in the fourth and two more in the fifth on a Caleb Cherryholmes two-RBI single back up the box. The Tigers got one more in the eighth inning.
Kyle Vogt picked up the win on the mound for the Tigers and improved to 3-5 this season. Vogt lasted five innings, giving up two runs on just three hits, with four strikeouts and two walks. Jackson Rolfs went the final four innings for the Tigers and allowed three runs (two earned) while giving up two hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
Fort Hays State looks for the three-game sweep on Saturday (Mar.25) when they take on Lincoln in the series finale at 1 pm.
