HAYS, Kan. — Joan Rumpel, assistant professor of economics, finance and accounting and advisor for more than 30 years to the Zeta Pi chapter of Alpha Kappa Psi at Fort Hays State University, lost a long and courageous battle to cancer last spring. Members of Zeta Pi have announced that they will honor their long-time advisor with a benefit concert for the Cancer Council of Ellis County.
The Jared Daniels Band will perform at 9 p.m. on Friday, April 15, at Fire and Ice, 229 West 10th Street. Admission is a suggested donation of $5 at the door. All proceeds from the event will go to the local cancer council.
“We are excited to host the Jared Daniels Band here in Hays. We feel this couldn’t be a more fitting way to honor Joan since the concert will be held on tax day,” said Brandon Taylor, vice president of fundraising and executive producer of the event.
The Jared Daniels Band has spent many days and nights playing national festivals, including the Country Stampede, the Wild West Festival, Dodge City Days and the Flatlands Festival in Kansas City. The band has opened for such national acts as Eric Church, Lady Antebellum, Jerrod Niemann, Joe Nichols, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, John Michael Montgomery, Joe Diffie, Tracy Lawrence, Sawyer Brown, the Charlie Daniels Band, the Josh Abbott Band, Randy Rogers, Jack Ingram, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Kevin Fowler and Wade Bowen.
Event sponsors include Days Inn of Hays, Western Beverage, Kaiser Liquor, Adams Brown Beran and Ball, and the Alpha Kappa Psi alumni.
Rumpel earned a master’s degree in business administration from Fort Hays State and later achieved the rank of certified public accountant. In 1977, she joined the FHSU Department of Economics, Finance and Accounting, where she taught accounting for 34 years while advising the Zeta Pi chapter.
