TOPEKA, Kan. – Fort Hays State’s D.J. Carr threw his second complete game of the season on Tuesday (Mar. 22) in an 8-1 win on the road at Washburn. The win for FHSU snapped a seven-game losing streak and pushed its overall record to 10-14, while improving to 4-9 in the MIAA. Washburn moved to 12-11 overall and 7-6 in the MIAA.
Carr kept the Ichabods off the base paths in three of the nine innings, while scattering eight hits. He did not walk any batters and struck out four. His only blemish was a solo home run allowed in the second to Ichabod cleanup hitter David Gauntt. Carr threw only 91 pitches in his complete game effort.
After trailing 1-0 through three innings, the Tigers finally got to Ichabod starter Maustin Otterstatter in the fourth. FHSU put together five hits in the inning to score four runs. Alex King tied the game with an RBI single, Nick Hammeke pushed the Tigers into the lead with an RBI double, Ty Redington had an RBI single, and Caleb Cherryholmes recorded an RBI on a groundout.
King added another RBI single in the fifth to make it 5-1, then a wild pitch and an RBI groundout by Alex Weiss plated two more in the sixth to make it 7-1. Connor Ross drove home the final run for FHSU in the eighth on a single. Ross led the Tigers in hits for the game, going 3-for-4 at the plate.
With the win, Carr improved to 2-3 overall on the season, while Washburn’s Otterstatter moved to 0-1.
The Tigers now head to Jefferson City, Mo., for a three-game series with Lincoln University covering Thursday through Saturday (Mar. 24-26).
