For many first year students, adjusting to college life can be a difficult feat. With all the changes that occur after high school, such as new living arrangements and an increased assignment load, some students struggle to live up to their full potential. President Mirta Martin is working to change that for students in the Hispanic community by creating the Hispanic College Institute.
The Hispanic College Institute at FHSU is aimed for current Hispanic and Latino high school sophomores and juniors who plan on furthering their education after high school. The Institute will take place from June 22nd through the 25th of this year, and will provide valuable information to prepare students for success while seeking higher education.
The Institute will come at no cost to the students, and applications for registration will be accepted through April 1st. The applications are available online at www.fhsu.edu/hci/Academics. Students will receive email confirmation on whether or not they were accepted later that month.
Throughout the four days that the Hispanic College Institute takes place, students can expect to attend workshops that target topics that are most beneficial to their age group. The workshops will discuss the foundations of college that students need in order to obtain success, as well as teach them ACT prep skills to help with the admission process. While at the institute, students will have the opportunity to meet successful Hispanic and Latino college students and learn what skills they need in order to get the most out of their higher educational experience.
The university hopes to expand programs like the Hispanic College Institute, and create more opportunities for students of different cultures to find success at Fort Hays State University. It is important that students have all the tools they require to do well in a higher education environment, and FHSU is hoping to make more students forward thinking and world ready.
